Bryan Adams has once again teamed up with Greenpeace – this time on their campaign for justice for the Tokyo Two.
The Tokyo Two are Japanese Greenpeace activists Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki. In 2008 they uncovered evidence that a Japanese whaling ship, Nisshin Maru, hunting whales in the Southern Ocean sanctuary under the guise of scientific research, was being used to illegally supply the whale meat market. After Greenpeace presented their findings at a press conference and the District Prosecutor agreed to investigate the case, the case was suddenly dropped and Greenpeace’s Tokyo offices raided by police. Junichi and Toru were arrested and held for intense daily interrogation. After almost a month they were released on bail where they await trial to face charges of whale meat theft and trespassing. If convicted they could face up to 10 years in prison. Amnesty International and Greenpeace believe that the case against the Tokyo Two is politically motivated and are demanding that the case be dropped.
To help their cause a company called Airside created a Manga-style comic strip telling their story for a flyer campaign. You can see a digital version at http://www.airside.co.uk The illustrations were also used at a recent protest held outside the Japanese Embassy in London, where Greenpeace supporters, including rock star Bryan Adams, coloured in a placard-size version of the flyer.
