Bryan has recently taken photos of Placido Domingo for the Hear The World Campaign and will be photographing other Ambassadors of the initiative soon.
The initiative aims to raise awareness on the importance of hearing. In the past, Adams has photographed individuals from around the globe: in addition to his work being featured in such magazines as British Vogue, Vanity Fair, Harper's Bazaar and his own magazine in Germany, Zoo, Adams recently released a book of portraits with Calvin Klein entitled "American Women" with all proceeds going to the New York based Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital for Cancer.
Charged with capturing the images of Hear the World’s ambassadors and supporters, Adams’s first assignment was to photograph tenor, conductor and opera house director Plácido Domingo making the iconic Hear the World gesture of someone consciously hearing by placing their hand behind their ear. Adams believes in the ideas behind the Hear the World initiative of raising awareness about the importance of hearing and to call attention to the social and emotional impact of hearing loss as well as prevention of and solutions to this problem that is affecting more than 10% of the world’s population.
What does hearing mean to you?
Obviously hearing is vital to what I do.
What is your motivation to participate in Hear the World?
I'm interested in the goals that Hear the World is trying to achieve. As a musician, I’m naturally sympathetic to a cause whose purpose is to help people appreciate and preserve an individual’s sense of sound.
What sounds do you find inspiring?
I’m inspired by music, voices, even the noises of the city in which I live.
What would you miss most if you weren’t able to hear?
The voices of people close to me. Hearing my audience cheer when I perform. My favorite music. The roaring of the ocean. I can not imagine a life without sound.
What is the experience like for you to photograph someone like Plácido Domingo?
Mr. Domingo is not only a world class artist but also an outstanding personality. I have great respect for his talent, experience, and character. His presence is strong, and it comes across in the final photograph we selected. To know that this image will be used to convey the message of Hear the World makes it even stronger.
