Bryan Adams Sculpture in Indianapolis
Sunday, 24 September 2006
Residents and visitors to the Circle City may remember the Tom Otterness exhibit downtown last year, which placed whimsical bronze sculptures throughout the downtown area. Next week, a new public art exhibit opens in Indianapolis. Something big is moving in downtown and it's sure to get a lot of attention. Inside some crates are large wooden animals including a deer, a cat and a goat. "I think they're pretty playful," said Jamie Pawus, artist and volunteer. They are among the works of British artist Julian Opie and part of his new 11-piece installation called Signs. "What he's going to do for the community is push us to understand the non-traditional use of materials, his use of sign-making, plastic and light and things like this. It's not traditional bronze. This is not your grandmother's sculpture," said Mindy Ross Taylor.

The exhibit includes a much larger than life rock star Bryan Adams, 90 figures pacing in the IMA entry pavilion, Bruce Walking downtown, Suzanne walking across the street and Sara Dancing on the corner.  Ross Taylor says Opie's work is fun and approachable. But Opie's work is also about seeing every day images in a new light. 'So if you think of the EMMIS ticker that goes across, what do you think of that? What kind of information do you take away from it? Julian is playing with that technology," she said. She hopes the exhibit will put Indy in the spotlight. The exhibit opens next Wednesday and runs for a year. It costs $250,000 and is paid for by the Cultural Development Commission with the IMA picking up the costs associated with the piece there.
