Nothing Quite Like A Big Apple Crowd

by Ana Carolina Mangelardo | January 11, 2007

January 9, 2007 — BRYAN Adams is in concert here. One night. Thursday. And, he says, “Bring earplugs.”

“Playing New York is different from anyplace else,” he told me. “I live in London and Canada. I’m doing this 20 years - 100 shows a year, 10 days every month. But New York is always different. Crowds are the best, and everything’s loud. The town just has a vibe. I’m thrilled to be here. My concert at the Beacon is sold out, so I’m not saying this because there’s a need to. I felt that way when I did the Garden in the ’90s. I feel it now.

“One thing that happens here that doesn’t elsewhere is, you’re driven crazy - not by the work. By your friends. You have to organize for them. You have to take their calls, and make their calls, and get their tickets, and worry where they’re seated and be sure it’s all happening. And for free. No one pays for anything. And if they stick around, you see them afterward. That’s when I have dinner. I do lunch then a small something at teatime. I’d throw up if I ate a really big meal before the show.”

So does he do the usual boring singer’s warm-up beforehand?

“No. A concert day is just another day for me. I don’t do vocal warm-ups. I just put the music out. I never chase it. I don’t even have a publicity person. I just do my shows, I travel and I leave. Not like I can’t sometimes get a frog in my throat, and not like I can’t occasionally be a pain in the ass, but age is doing well for my voice. I’m like old cheese. Smelly but tasting better.”

After 15 albums, three Oscar nominations, and now up for a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for his “Never Gonna Break My Faith” song for “Bobby,” he hangs up the phone with “And make sure you tell people I’m single. And looking.”
