Bryan Adams Talks About Guitars

MAX: Mr. Adams, how many guitars do you have?
Bryan Adams: I think I have about 40 models.
MAX: Which is the most valuable?
BA: A cherry-red Fender Stratocaster, which I bought in
St. Louis in 1983. Since then, I´ve played it on every
album. You can hear its sound clearly on my song
(Everything I do)I do it for you.
MAX: Do you use guitars which have been used? From popular musicians for example?
BA: I have a lot of used guitars, but not from popular
ex-holders.
MAX: Which was your first?
BA: My first guitar was a Sunburst Red Stratocaster, which I bought in the british city of Reading in 1970.
There´s an anecdote about it. When I went back to Canada one year later, I gave this instrument as a present to my neighbour. So 25 years later, in the mid-nineties, I got an e-mail from my neighbour asking if I would like to get the guitar back in memory of my early days.
I said sure I would like to, but sadly I never heard from him again. Not too long ago, a stranger spoke to me in Berlin asking if I still wanted to get that guitar back. It turned out that he was a relative of my neighbour´s and that he had lost his life at a plane crash before he was able to give me back that guitar.
Now this guitar is back to me.
MAX: How important is a guitar for you?
BA: I answer this question with a quote from the american
countrysinger Harlan Howard, he owned a wonderful acoustic guitar, Martin 000, then when he sold it to a younger musician and when asked the reason why he wanted to get rid of it, then he answered:”There is no more songs in ths this guitar, I´ve written them all.”
MAX: Is your favourite guitar a kind of steady
companion?
BA: Sadly no. I do not take it along when I am on tour. It´s too risky. But I still use it in studio.
MAX: Let´s guess: When you´re writing a new song then…
BA: … yeah, I mostly work with guitars, with acoustic guitars though. My theory is, if the songs go with
it, then it sounds good with everything.
MAX: Do you think female guitarists are sexy?
BA: Very. A friend of mine, the ex-bassist of the
Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa Auf der Maur, is the sexiest guitarist of the world.
MAX: Is the guitar some kind of friend for you?
BA: Yes, I can´t imagine my life without it, its a part of me, with a guitar I can express what I want to say musically.
There´s no better quote that could describe it better than this one from Victor Hugo: Music expresses what can´t be said and what is impossible to keep silent.
MAX: Who is the best guitarist ever?
BA: Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin
MAX: The worst gutarist?
BA: Me.
MAX:Which song do you play your best solo?
BA: “Heat of the Night” on my album Into the Fire.
MAX: Best guitar solo ever?
BA: “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin.
MAX: You are a photographer - Which guitarist would you like to photograph”?
BA: I would like to photograph Les Paul, a guitarist whom is still alive. He was one of the most popular US-musicians in forties and fifties and he was involved with the development of the great Gibson-Les-Paul-guitar. These models are all handmade and are the most valuable and most expensive ever.
MAX: If you could take only three things to a desert
island, would a guitar be one of them?
BA: Of course! And also a tool box and a woman.

Great interview! I think he’s been steadily improving as a guitarist. Keith’s great and I don’t think Bryan’s too bad either. Nice humor when he thinks that he’s the worst guitarist in the world. I would say that Bruce Springsteen is less of guitarist than Bryan is.
I also read sometime back a conversation between Bryan and Jason Newsted the ex-Metallica bassist. That was good too. Apart from these 2 articles, haven’t read many articles where Bryan talks about guitars.

Would you guess? I’ve been listening to this guy since before I was born. lol My father was a HUGE fan of Adams and blasted his music every chance he has, which is all the time. I’m only a little over 16, and I haven’t listened to half of the greatest musicians ever; but this I know, Bryan Adams is a phenomenal musician and he is as influential as Alexander the Great and Qin Shihuang-di. =D I bought my first guitar mid-March this year, and through my desire to become as good a player as him, well, let’s say I’m the fastest self-taught player in my school. Hehe. Love ya, and KIDS JUST WANNA ROCK!
P.S. I know a lot of famous people don’t read news about them, but I’m hoping, so if you’re reading: Thank you SO MUCH!
