‘Violence Seems To Be The Way Of The World Today’

KARACHI: The ‘violently’ anti-violence Bryan Adams is one of the first really big names to make it to Karachi in a long, long time. The Canadian rocker, who hit it big in the 1980s with chart topping pop numbers such as ‘Summer of ‘69′ and ‘Run to You’ has continued to win fans across the globe. He has also made a name for himself as a photographer and philanthropist. His mischievous portrait of HRH Queen Elizabeth II is now used on a Canadian stamp and his book of photographs of Canadian women with breast cancer ‘Made in Canada’ (1999) helped raise funds for the cause.
Daily Times managed to get a short interview with Adams after his press conference with Shahzad Roy, who he was scheduled to perform with on Sunday night to benefit earthquake survivor children.
Daily Times: Where were you when the earthquake hit?
Bryan Adams: I guess somewhere on tour in North America. It was just horrible. You don’t want things like that happening.
DT: As you know, Pakistan has been involved with the “war on terrorism”. What are your thoughts on that?
BA: I think that these are very, very difficult times and there’s obviously a great groundswell … sort of [an] underground … to try and change things and a lot of it is based on religious beliefs. It’s difficult. My feeling is that it’s unfortunate that it has to lead to violence because I’m a big advocate of non-violence. Violence does beget violence. So, I’m not a supporter of violence. But, that just seems to be the way of the world at the moment.
DT: Were you in London on 7/7?
BA: Yes, I was. I live in the heart of London.
DT: Do you have any other photography projects in the pipeline?
BA: I have various things up my sleeve … The creative process continues to evolve.
DT: What are you reading these days?
BA: That’s interesting. Huckleberry Finn.
DT: Oh! Did someone give it to you?
BA: [No.] I read Tom Sawyer a few months ago. And I tend to read a lot of scripts.
DT: Last question. What are you wearing today?
BA: A shirt and a pair of jeans…?
DT: I mean, where did you get them?
BA: Oh, you mean which designers. The shirt is Calvin Klein and the jeans are from a place called ‘jeans shop’.
