Adams makes up for lost time

Twenty years after he vowed never to return, Bryan Adams played to a sold-out audience at the Sudbury Community Arena.
The 46-year-old Canadian rocker told the 4,500 people in the crowd he was glad to see things had changed and promised to make up for lost time.
Adams last played Sudbury Jan. 12, 1985, while promoting his breakout album, Reckless. A couple of rowdy fans in the front row threw objects on the stage, striking Adams in the face.
Neil McKay was 26 at the time.
He came back on the stage and said he’d never come back to Sudbury, said McKay.
I was shocked.
McKay returned to the arena Wednesday with his wife Jean, who had accompanied him two decades earlier.
The crowd has since grown up, said Norma and Wayne Cascanette, leaning over the stands.
We had to come because Bryan Adams was our wedding song, said Norma.
The quintessential love song, Everything I Do I Do It For You, was the first song they danced to as a married couple.
Soul sister Divine Brown opened up the concert and not Daniel Powter, who was originally slated for the opening slot.
Celebrating 25 years as a musician and the release of his first two-CD collection, Anthology, it’s no surprise that Adams’ fans are both young and old.
He’s a versatile singer who appeals to all ages, said Lisa Tessier, who grew up listening to Adams.
For many, the concert was a family outing. Mike and Eyvonne Wheale’s children grew up listening to their daddy play Summer of ’69 and Cuts Like a Knife on his guitar.
Consequently, their 20-year-old daughter is a huge fan.
Bryan Adams rocks, she said, walking into the arena with her siblings and parents.
Summer of ’69 reminds me of my life and my dad.
Sylvie Albert brings her son to as many concerts as she can. Recently, they saw Evanescence in Toronto.
We enjoy concerts and when stars like Bryan Adams come and play in your own back yard, we’ve got to go, she said, as her son tugged on her sleeve when he saw his vice-principal walk by.
